Bulgarian Nurses in Libya Case Remains EU Top Priority

The fate of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya remains a matter of great concern for the European Union, Luxembourg's Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Nicolas Schmitt was cited as saying.
Schmitt's comments came after it was reported that the EU is preparing a cooperation agreement that is to be sign with Tripoli. Nicolas Schmitt also pointed out that the fact that EU is cooperating with Libya, does not mean that Europe has forgotten the five nurses.
The European Commission has proposed a program of technical support, training and aid for Libya to help it cope with a flood of immigration from Africa and the Middle East that feeds directly into Europe.
In May 2004, Libya found the five Bulgarian health workers and a Palestinian doctor guilty of having caused the death of 40 children and of infecting almost 400 others with HIV at a Benghazi hospital.
The nurses were sentenced to death by a firing squad, sparkling cries of foul from Bulgaria and its allies the United States and the European Union.
The medics' confessions, which were extracted with torture, is the only evidence proving their guilt. |
